ARTICLE: Writing the Next Chapter of Garwood’s Story

Since being elected in 2020, I've been part of a great team with current Mayor Jen Blumenstock and my Democratic colleagues on the Council, Marc Lazarow, Russ Graham and Clarissa Nolde. The team also includes our past two Mayors, along with former Council Members from both parties. My running mates, Karina Boto and Sean Foley, are new to our team. So, what’s our plan? The short version is to invest in Garwood’s residents, departments, and businesses community whenever and wherever it is financially responsible. (Our full platform is up at togethergarwoodwins.com).
Because we’re talking about investing tax dollars, over the years our team has said “no” more often than we have said “yes”, but still delivered paved roads, updated infrastructure, and beautiful public spaces, such as Hartman Park and our Rec Complex; all while supporting Garwood’s departments as much as possible. Look, no one on Council was happy about the tax raise this year. We have some tough calls to make as a community going forward, but our team will keep making them and doing right by this town, instead of throwing up our hands or pointing fingers.
I believe Garwood is at a crossroads. Our team wants to write the next chapter of Garwood's story with a collaborative approach, transparent planning and open communication like I, and my team, have been doing with recorded Council meetings allowing online interaction and all viewpoints to be heard. I have always spoken plainly and leveled with this community, and I’m not stopping now.
I believe if we stay the course, Garwood will be here, and thriving, for another 120 years! So, let’s have the real conversations about what our future looks like, because we want to hear your ideas too, Garwood! Rather than endless conflict with keyboard warriors in censored Facebook forums, Sean, Karina and I will host virtual “meet and greets” where we will take questions. Of course, we also will be knocking on doors between now and Election Day!
One of the many things I’ve learned in the time I’ve been privileged to serve on the Council is, once all the facts are known, that I can always count on Garwood to get it right. Thank you.
